Nothing Much

With no Friday Five and no interesting news, it's gotten quiet around here again. Although...

I have a new mattress. It's very big, which which I mean thick. It's almost like it's twice as thick as my old one, and it doesn't quite fit on the bed. But it's really, really comfy, which is probably why I didn't get up till four p.m. yesterday. That and the fact that I'm always tired at the weekends.

Bah

Work was dull today. It dragged out almost painfully, then, just as my brain was starting to run down, I was forced to think about three complicated things at once.

A horrible strain.

I don't have the energy to go swimming either. So maybe it's not all bad. Just means I'll be carrying a few ounces of fat around for longer than expected, that's all.

Sofas. Sofas and books.

Something in the heroic vein, either fantasy or sci-fi.

A mixture of quiet and loud, happy and sad, full of meaning and just fluff.

Not-Drowning

Or as others call it, swimming.

I did some on Wednesday evening. Damn near killed me, it did. But I suspect I'll be going again next week.

Work

I hate being responsible for important projects.

I hate having to muster enough energy to be bothered to do things that I don't care about.

I hate having to go to places and try and act like I'm interested in what I do.

"Get Multiplicated With Your Friday Five This Week!"

1. What was the last song you heard?

"God Is A DJ" by Pink.

2. What were the last two movies you saw?

Technically, The Return Of The King and... The Return Of The King. But, if we're just limiting ourselves to the cinema, it should be The Return Of The King and The Last Samurai. Otherwise, I also watched Equilibrium on DVD last weekend.

3. What were the last three things you purchased?

Sandwiches; some books on eBay; and a panini and coffee at Coffee Primo.

4. What four things do you need to do this weekend?

Pay some cheques into the library; send off some stuff to my eBay buyers; see if I can get the small craters in my windscreen patched up; and watch the DVDs/play the games/read the books I don't get to watch/play/read during the week because I'm not at home.

5. Who are the last five people you talked to?

If we're including online conversations then that would be my boss, my mother, a good friend (online), and two people down in Andover. Not very inspiring or interesting, I'm afraid.

Perverted-Justice.com

Just thought I'd mention this, as I had to pass on a message to AngryGerman.

Their Mission Statement: "To root out and bring to light those who would use the internet as a way to sexually abuse children, to brighten the darkened corner of the internet from which they wish to prey upon small children."

They do good work. Basically the staff at the site pretend to be underage and talk to "wannabe pedophiles" in chatrooms, keeping a log of the chat with which to expose said "wannabe pedophiles" on the site. They have worked with the police, and have had a lot of media coverage recently. It's non-profit, it's time consuming, and it seems to work, since there have been a number of investigations and arrests as a result of the actions of the PeeJ staff.

One of the things they do is arrange for "wannabe pedophiles" they have targetted to 'meet' with their supposed underage friend. Only when the door is opened, they are faced with fully adult persons wielding video cameras...

Here is an example of their work, and probably the most publicised.

I hope that's a good enough description of what they do. Go to the site for a better idea.

Five Makes A Comeback

What was...

1. ...your first grade teacher's name?

You really expect me to remember that far back? As an alternative answer, one of my first teachers was Mrs Collins, sister to Shirley Valentine actress Pauline Collins.

2. ...your favorite Saturday morning cartoon?

I'm not sure I had a favourite. I know I watched some and made a special effort to do so, but I can't remember what they were.

3. ...the name of your very first best friend?

I would have to guess at Mark Taggart.

4. ...your favorite breakfast cereal?

Frosties. You know what? They're gggrrrrrreat!!

5. ...your favorite thing to do after school?

Not work.

Oscars

Return Of The King did well, didn't it? Mind you, it's suffering a bit of "oh no, it's won another one" syndrome at the moment too. Screw 'em. Greatest ever cinematic achievement, filming the impossible-to-film movie and adapting the impossible-to-adapt book. Taking seven years to do it. Practically creating the entire New Zealand film industry while they are at it. Making superstars of it's actors. Bringing the famous books to glorious life.

Most excellent.

Cat No More

Well, she's gone.

She looked alert when I got there, but that was the painkillers talking. She was looking around and enjoying being stroked, even purring. But she was clearly very ill. So we had a little time together, then the vet gave her the injection and she slowly slipped away.

I've known that cat longer than I've known all my friends. I'll miss her terribly.

I asked the vets to get her privately cremated so we can spread her ashes around the garden. She deserves that.

Nine To None

On Saturday, I came home from seeing The Return Of The King again to find my cat had broken her leg. It was horrible, hanging all loose and wobbly, and she kept on trying to walk backwards as if trying to find her leg so it could stop her. Thanks to a friend I managed to get hold of a vet that had a 24 hour service and I took her in. I was a little worried, as she's old, 17 or 18, and as been having the kidney problems that most old cats get eventually.

I rang up today and found out that, basically, it's the end of the line for her. She's too sick, really, for her to survive any sort of surgery or to recover from the injury, since the kidney disease has really taken hold now. It might even have made her bones extra fragile. We had thought she was looking a bit rough.

So I'll be paying her a final visit this afternoon, and then she will be gone.
